My Personal Story

I have designed this safestep chair for myself as I have fractured hip. Walking is very painful for me.

At 74 years of age I do not wish surgery but need to scoot around my house so I do not have to walk, thus preventing a fall.

Also

I lived with my mother the last 25 years of her life.

She had Parkinson disease.
She fell and soon after passed away.

Why did she fall?

She should not have been walking unassisted.

A safestep chair could have prevented this happening to our family.

Senior Falls And Their Impact On Living Arrangements

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one in four older adults (age 65 and older) falls each year. This translates to about 14 million falls annually in the United States.

Based on data from 2020, the total health care cost of non-fatal older adult falls is $80 billion per year, up from $50 billion in 2015. Sixty-seven percent of fall-related costs are paid for by Medicare, 4% by Medicaid, and 29% is paid privately/out-of-pocket by older adults and families.

The alarming issue with wheelchairs

Physician Grady Dugas, the inventor of the automatic wheelchair locking system, saw a crying need for the automatic locks while treating patients in nursing homes. Some patients fell repeatedly, often injuring themselves seriously while attempting to get into or out of their wheelchairs. They did not consistently remember to engage the wheelchairs’ manual brakes. As a result, the wheelchairs would roll away from them as they attempted to stand up. Often these injuries changed the quality of the rest of the patients’ lives,” said Dr. Dugas. To help these people, the wheelchair brakes needed to be automatic.

Dr. Dugas made it his mission to solve the problem. After experimenting with various designs, Dr. Dugas was awarded patent # 5,203,433 on April 20, 1993 for his wheelchair automatic wheel lock system.

Still Wheelchairs do not come with a anti-roll back locking system... until now with our safe step chair.
